Invited Design Competition

The client group sought submissions for an Invited Design Competition from multi-disciplinary design teams with exceptional and specialist design skills in order to deliver a new cultural venue for The Maltings in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Introduction

The Maltings current Eastern Lane venue is no longer fit for purpose and the Maltings (Berwick) Trust has worked in partnership with Northumberland County Council (NCC) to secure Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal funding to deliver a 21st century venue on the existing site that transforms the customer experience, hosts a significantly enhanced programme, and acts as a major catalyst for the year round regeneration of Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Competition Format

The design team is being procured by the Client in accordance with the requirements of the Competitive Procedure with Negotiation (CPN) as set out within Regulation 29 of PCR15.

Phase One is a Selection Questionnaire (SQ) which requests relevant experience and approach to the project especially from the designers; and information on the proposed team composition.

A shortlist of up to five teams will be selected for Phase Two, the Invitation to Participate in the negotiation phase. The negotiation phase will be restricted to design-related considerations, with the opportunity for participants to discuss and develop their design concept with the client. This will take the form of a competition workshop with each team.

Each team invited to submit a Final Tender who then submits a compliant tender and makes a presentation at the clarification interview will receive an honorarium payment of GBP £5,000 (+VAT). Honorarium payments will be paid following submission and presentation of design proposals at a final interview.
