Low Line Vision

The Low Line will be a new walking destination for London. It will connect diverse neighbourhoods and communities along the length of the mighty Victorian viaducts in south London and will re-define this unique and historic infrastructure to create new hubs of industry, jobs, creativity, sustainability and entertainment along its course.

Aims and guiding principles
of the Low Line:

Aims

  • We will work together to create a world-class walking destination for South London.

  • We will remove barriers and enable connectivity, to make unique spaces that support attractive, inclusive and sustainable public realm and supports ecology, green infrastructure and wildlife.

  • We prioritise development that is modern yet celebrates the historic character of the railway viaduct. We encourage a diverse range of businesses and operators.

  • The Low Line enables social mobility and regenerates the local areas. We engage and inspire our communities. We create opportunities for local businesses, and boost jobs and skills for local people.

Guiding principles

To work towards this vision, the Low Line steering group will:

  • Develop a collaborative strategy for the Low Line route, including plans for inspiring architecture and public realm, which recognise the distinct character of each area.

  • Agree a strategy for encouraging a diverse range of uses, boutique, artisan, and specialist tenants, and small, independent businesses.

  • Secure engagement and involvement of the local community at the heart of our strategy.

  • Promote the highest environmental standards, delivering improvements for wildlife, encourage sourcing of environmentally sustainable materials and maximise opportunities to re-use and re-cycle.

  • Collectively encourage tenants to create skills and training opportunities for local people.

  • Collaborate, coordinate, consult and communicate as part of the Low Line steering group.

  • Develop a shared communications strategy to enable partners to speak with 'one voice' and build the Low Line brand as an iconic, world-class walking destination.

  • Ensure the strategy is consistent with and complements the New Southwark Plan and the wider policy framework of the New London Plan.
